obsessed: glass demijohn lamps

A few months ago, I purchased the Clift oversize mercury glass lamp on major clearance at Pottery Barn after seeing it on Instagram but was so disappointed to discover I had GROSSLY underestimated its ginormous size. It was absolutely stunning, but seriously looked as if a human being was sitting on one end of my console table.  I needed two for my entryway but the only way two of these lamps would have worked was if I had enough space in my foyer for a dining table.  So, back it went, much to my dismay (I still think of that lamp with a mix of extreme fondness and disappointment, if you can’t tell!) After searching for a similar lamp and coming up empty handed, I thought I’d save a little dough (and my sanity) and look for demijohn bottles to make my own, instead.  I actually DIY-ed this a few years ago here.  You can buy a cork to fit the opening and lamp kits are super inexpensive at hardware stores.  It’s a beautiful alternative and I love that no one can walk into your house and pinpoint exactly where it came from!  To show how beautiful demijohn lamps are, here are a few lovely images from design genius Steven Gambrel, who uses them all over his own home as well as those of many of his clients:

This is one of my favorite living rooms of all time.  The oversize demijohn bottle lamps work so well here, thanks to the soaring ceilings, and they anchor the furniture so beautifully:

Amazon and Etsy are great sources for affordable demijohn bottles in many different sizes.  Use keywords like “demijohn”, “demijohn bottles”, “wine casks” in your search. Here are a few great options I found on Etsy:

Love the colors in this set of three:

I love the teardrop shape of this one:

A beautiful clear option:

Here is the lamp kit I used for mine:
