dining room progress: grass cloth goes up!

It’s been an exciting few days at my house as the grass cloth I’ve pined for the last few years started going up in my dining room!  I bit the bullet a few months ago and ordered a few rolls and even though just the ceiling, tray sophet and one wall are done, I can’t help myself from walking past just to sneak peeks all day long!

I went back and forth over whether or not to paper just the walls or to do the tray ceiling as well, but in the end I chose to do it all and I’m SO glad I did….the molding looks so amazing and having it on the ceiling adds so much drama to the space now!  It definitely wouldn’t have made the same impact, had I not taken it up to the ceiling and I figured, if you’re going to spend the money, you might as well get as much bang for your buck:

A peek from the entry way into the dining room; I love that all that golden goodness will be reflected in the oversize round mirror:

I have to hand it to my amazing installer; she killed it on the corners of the sophet AND she did it all by herself!

I’m so obsessed.  I can only imagine I will have an aneurysm from excitement once the entire room is finished:

A view from the dining room into the kitchen; even from another room it looks so crisp against the white cabinetry and I LOVE the contrast of the cool chrome chandelier against all that warm texture:

You might remember my original plan for accessorizing the room which included using my existing furniture (for now):

…but now that I see how much the room has changed with the paper up, the cherry table and hutch look even more red against the walls, so now I’m debating either selling it all OR slapping some glossy white paint on it as a temporary fix.  What do you think?  To paint or sell, that is the question…..

See what I mean?  We really hadn’t planned on shelling out money for more furniture right now, but this cherry cannot stay.  I’m thinking that hutch would look fabulous painted glossy white, but am on the fence as to whether or not I should just sell it all and start over.

More pictures to come as soon as the rest of the grass cloth gets hung!

Happy Hump Day!

Wow, that grasscloth is stunning. I love it. That room is going to be amazing.

My vote on the hutch is to sell it. I'm not sure it's every going to be right for the space, no matter what color it is. Maybe better to have nothing there for a bit instead of a placeholder that isn't quite right (plus you'll have to put some serious time into painting it). Just my 2 cents.

LOVE your grasscloth and the decision to cover the ceiling – so unique and beautiful! For the energy involved I think I would sell the hutch, keep the table and consider painting it in a lacquer finish? You've got great taste so I'm sure whatever you choose will be great! For storage I was thinking something more "open / airy" than the hutch (ie low sideboard or open shelving) to highlight the grasscloth.

Erin – you're so right, I know it!! It makes me choke thinking of having to buy new stuff but living in the space for a while and getting a better feel for what I really want in there is probably the way to go. Thank you so much! xx

Meredith – the bamboo credenza I included in the post was more along the lines of what I was thinking if I got rid of the hutch – great minds! Thank you so much for the suggestion! xx

That grasscloth is fabulous! I have been debating on doing it in my foyer and this makes me want to go for it. I would say sell the furniture and I would sell both pieces. People still like sets of furniture and that looks like it's in great condition. I bet you could get more than you think for it. Look for a bamboo console or dresser to look like the one from your vision board….it is so good. Cant wait to see it finished! Good luck!

Thank you so much, Joy! I hope you're right and that someone will want it and care for it like we have! You should so put the grass cloth in your foyer….I waited five years to do this and the second the first piece went up, I immediately wished I had done it sooner! xx

Don't paint it white, paint it black.

Black would look amazing, too, Ann!! If I'm going to paint it, though, I definitely would want to keep it light and bright! xx

This is so exciting! It looks amazing, Kelly. But I see what you're saying about the cherry. I'd keep the hutch and paint it. My brain keeps thinking color. Maybe a glossy blue-gray or navy or green. The mirrored back of the hutch would probably keep the color from being overwhelming. Good luck, can't wait to see it when it's done!
