nantucket gem

Part of the fun of hoarding old issues of design magazines is re-discovering a gem of a house tour you fell in love with when it first came out.  The Nantucket abode of Peter and Elizabeth Georgantas, owners of Boston-based PEG Properties, which was featured in Coastal Living a few years back, is one of those homes for me.  Built in 1739 by the Macy family (of department store fame!), this impeccably restored, shingle-style beauty was also featured in Boston Magazine last summer and it’s even more amazing, I had to share!  Charming details like the gorgeous ceiling beams, hardwood floors and brickwork- all original to the house-blend so seamlessly with the additions made to the home that you can’t even tell what is original and what is new!  There is so much to love in this house, it’s honestly one of my favorites!

Is there anything better than a cedar shake-clad exterior?  I think not.

Creamy white walls are such a beautiful compliment to dark wood floors and that gorgeous stairway in the entry:

Love the strap-hinge hardware on the cabinetry in the lovely (and spacious!) butler’s pantry, but the view into the kitchen and that gorgeous La Cornue range is breathtaking:

Iron pendant lights, an industrial storage locker and a ginormous reclaimed wood island anchor the all-white kitchen:

Board and batten walls compliment reclaimed wood beams in the dining room where the table is made of the same wood as the kitchen island:

Many of the marine-inspired antique accessories throughout the house were carefully picked from trips to Brimfield – I especially love the clipper ship andirons!

A third floor attic became a room for the couple’s two adorable little girls – pitched ceilings call for an indoor swing (genius!) and subtle nautical details like flushmount ceiling lights, a porthole window in the bathroom door and beds suspended from rope are so charming!

The charm doesn’t stop indoors – the couple replaced a gardening shed in bad shape with a garage with guest quarters above:
