j+t’s playroom

Kids rooms and nurseries are quickly becoming some of my favorite spaces to work on!  Partly because there is such a sense of fun and adventure in decorating for little ones, but also because it’s impossible to take these spaces too seriously.  When the mama of two special little boys, aged 3 1/2 and 2 years old, asked for my help in combining a formal living and dining area into a huge play space for them, I jumped at the chance.  These little guys live in base housing that was built back in the early 70’s – you can’t paint the walls, but we sure compensated by adding lots of muted colors, fun prints, plenty of storage and, to add personal touch, oversize black and white photos of the boys:

First up, a 4 foot by 6 foot corkboard, covered in a green and cream chevron fabric and trimmed in antique brass nail heads, to display the boys’ artwork.  A huge, old-school blackboard was hard to find, so instead, a ginormous piece of plywood will be covered in chalkboard paint and topped with crown molding to create the illusion of a custom piece.  A playroom wouldn’t be complete without a table and chairs.  Inexpensive shelving, bins and baskets will corral toys, games and books, while a large braided rug ties the space together.  Monogrammed bean bag chairs can easily be moved around the room.  Pictures of the finished space to come!
