sea captain’s quarters

Architect/interior designer Steven Gambrel is, hands down, one of the most talented in the business.  Of all the projects in his stunning portfolio, though, his home in Sag Harbor is my favorite – the charming details and character of this former sea captain’s cottage is eclipsed only by the architectural heritage and historic legacy that Gambrel honored while renovating.  There is so much to love about this house – wide plank pine floors, beautiful detailed moldings, beamed ceilings, planked walls, lots of natural textures and subtle nautical details, to name a few.  What I love most, though, is the color palette throughout the entire home-the painted moldings, doors and shutters in different shades of pale blue, it is such a stunning twist on the traditional “beach” house!  See for yourself:

The gorgeous view of Sag Harbor Cove:

Oversize furniture, bamboo Roman blinds and an impressive collection of Stag Horn Ferns create an extension of the indoor living areas on the back porch:

A stone barn at the back of the property is such a cozy spot for entertaining:

Love those wide plank pine floors and the contrast between the black railing and the pale blue planked walls:

In one hallway, wooden block walls are meant to simulate stonework, inspired by Mount Vernon – what an interesting way to add character and texture!

The kitchen is one of my favorites-marble floors; blue and white painted cabinetry; vaulted, planked ceiling and walls of subway tile -be still my heart!

Love the blue moldings and nautical lighting in the eating area:

Such an artful array of cozy furniture in the living  area, with a fabulous view of the cove beyond!

The living room in the guesthouse is one of my all-time favorites….the planked, vaulted ceiling, gray/blue moldings, comfy furniture, glass lamps and loads of natural light make this one room I would never want to leave!

Back stairwell off the eating area, leading to the master bedroom:

Closeup detail of the rope handrail:

Walls, molding and trim in a guest bedroom is painted Gambrel’s favorite shade of pale blue:

What did I tell you?  One of the most amazing sea captain’s cottages!  To see more of this house, and to see other work in his portfolio, click here.
