diy: gilded picture frame

I hope you all had a wonderful Turkey Day!  For those of you uninterested in the chaos that is Black Friday, how about a little DIY? Old picture frames and spray paint go together like peas and carrots, but I’ve got a twist for you today!  I love gilded picture frames, so I thought I’d try my hand at giving a little golden TLC to a 20×30 frame that is currently black.  The result is subtle and oh, so pretty! To start, I gave the frame a good sanding with 400-grit paper:

Next, I sprayed two light coats of this, my favorite gold spray paint.  Be sure to keep the coats light to ensure no drips!

The gold was beautiful enough on its own…

…but I really wanted to see how it would look with a little “gilding”, so, using a foam brush, I brushed on a light coat of stain in dark walnut, then wiped it back with a rag:

The stain really got into the crevices on the inner part of the frame and as a little added benefit, unbeknown to me, sanding it before created a beautiful crackling effect in the corners, which was highlighted beautifully by the stain:

A little bit of stain really did go a long way in creating a subtle, antiqued feel:

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!  Stay tuned for a giveaway on the blog on Monday!

Nice to know which gold spray paint is the best…..I always get confused. I think adding the stain gave it a really nice patina.
