white done right

When I think of the perfect beach house, the first thing that comes to mind is lots of natural light, tons of texture, no-fuss furniture, soft slipcovers, built-ins perfect for lounging and white as far as the eye can see.  This beautiful beach cottage in Summerland, California, is the perfect example.  I first saw it a few years ago on Pottery Barn’s “Where I Live” series – remember when they used to post them?  They don’t run the series anymore, but I found the video online here.  Take a peek, it’s gorgeous!

It’s hard to keep an all-white house from looking sterile or uninteresting, but owner Suzie Mecay did a beautiful job layering soft white walls and planked ceilings with durable fabrics, wicker furniture and seagrass rugs, perfectly framing the gorgeous views of the beach right outside the window.  I especially love the pops of green from the antique demijohns:

Here are my picks for achieving a similar look:

Adirondack chair

Chaise lounge

Cameron drape

Oversize seagrass basket

Green demijohns

Wicker chair

Crochet pillows

Potted orchid

Benjamin Moore White Dove
