staghorn fern

If you’re looking for a dramatic focal point for your garden, porch or deck, try a staghorn fern!  Ever since I saw Steven Gambrel’s amazing collection on his porch, I’ve been obsessed with them. They grow in nature on trees, and I’ve seen them mounted on pieces of driftwood, but my favorite is mounted on wood plaques and grouped together like antler trophies. They love bright, filtered light (no direct sunlight)and thrive in humid areas, perfect for porches and somewhat shade gardens.  These bad boys can get unusually large (try 200-300 pounds), which is why I’ve hesitated to try them myself, but after seeing all these inspiring photos, it’s seriously got me reconsidering!

If you’re looking to start your own collection, Amazon sells them already mounted:

Or, buy a few baby plants here and try your hand at mounting them yourself.  I found a great tutorial over on Apartment Therapy here:

Happy Planting!  Send me a pic if you end up trying….I’m dying to see how they turn out!
