quick fix for leftover trimmings from the tree
Thank you to everyone who entered the giveaway yesterday; I can’t wait to announce a winner this Friday! We always get a Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving and this year was no exception. There are always a handful of extra branches that get trimmed off the bottom of the tree to fit it into the tree stand and for some reason, this year I had even more than usual. I filled pitchers and bud vases with some of the extras and then decided to fill in urns on either side of our front door with the rest. All spring, summer and well into fall, huge Boston ferns flank our front door, so when it gets cold and the ferns move to the garage, the porch always feels so empty and bleak to me. Leftover frasir fir branches were the perfect, inexpensive way to give a little holiday cheer to the front of the house!
I filled urns halfway with pinecones from my backyard (I always do this in my pots to help keep them from being too heavy to move, but also to help with drainage):
I filled the rest with dirt and padded it down tight:
A few branches from trees in the backyard went straight into the middle of each pot for height:
And then I filled the rest with frasir fir branches, packing them in good. I watered mine to help keep them fresh – no idea if this will work, but hopefully, it will do until Christmas. As you can see, I still have yet to find the perfect gray/blue for my front door!
