neutral territory

As much as I love pops of color and fun pattern (in small doses, of course!), nothing can compare to the calmness of a beautifully layered, neutral space (and it’s even better when the outside happens to be just as fabulous as the inside!)  This oceanfront home by architectural and interior design firm Sawyer Berson, is the epitome of neutral, sophisticated chic…it gets my heart racing! Despite its size, the house is incredibly comfy and chock full of charming details like planked ceilings, Dutch doors, floor-to-ceiling windows, linen slipcovered furniture, beautifully detailed built-ins and espresso, wide planked floors.  Can you tell how much I love this house?  See for yourself:

Cedar shake shingles, crisp white trim and gorgeous greenery is the only way to do a beach house, in my opinion!

Does it get any more perfect than a double porch, privacy hedge, pool deck and those oversize loungers?

When we put our pool in, we wanted the water to look darker, so we had the plaster tinted a dark cerulean blue…it looks like this pool has a similar finish and it blends so beautifully into the ocean blue beyond:

A brick fireplace and dark octagonal table in the entryway is so welcoming:

When you have a view like that, you don’t need to go overboard on the details inside.  Floor-to-ceiling windows, white slipcovered furniture, amazing millwork and a touch of animal print is both elegant and casual, the perfect blend (and one of my favorite rooms in the whole house!):

How charming is this kitchen?  White glassfront cabinets, planked walls and ceiling and a Dutch door are sheer perfection!

Banquet seating and linen slipcovered furniture are must-haves for a beach house:

A butler’s pantry off the back stairs?  Yes, please!

Another light, bright and cozy living space:

A Dutch door in the master bath:

Slate floors, rustic benches and plantation doors abound in the mudroom:

Happy Hump Day!

Oh wow. This is really incredible. I have a theory about neutral spaces like this. I feel like anything more would totally detract from the beautiful architecture and surroundings. But often spaces fall flat and feel cold and plain when they're this neutral but lack the architectural detail (as most homes do). Something I struggle with sometimes. Thanks for sharing!

You're so right, Kate! Any color or pattern would have totally detracted from the view…instead beautiful details and muted neutrals compliment the gorgeous ocean view!

Love this house….where may I purchase the small wall sconces? They are fabulous.

Where is the hook wall bar from in the mudroom?
